Sydney Botulinum injections (BoTox for short) has become the latest thing amongst Sydney’s fashionable set in fact it is fast becoming a grooming must for individuals in the Harbour City.
But I never cease to be astonished by the insane stories surrounding this uncomplicated procedure. I have included below a few of the myths which we encounter daily at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a physician.
Delusion Number 1: I may not be able to use my facial muscles normally!
Research has found there are approximately sixty muscles in the human face. The excessive use of these muscles over a period of time can cause wrinkles. Too many injections of BoTox have the effect of the face appearing less taut. Generally doctors use comparatively low quantities to are calculated to make you appear ‘refreshed’, yet you will remain just as expressive.
So by using the correct amount of the wrinkle injection in just the right muscles facial expression is retained whilst any fine lines are smoothed.
Delusion Number 2: Botulinum is toxic!
This to some extent is true. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the proper pharmaceutical terminology. In massive quantities it can result in loss of muscle tone and can even cause sickness.
Pharmacists have a famous saying ‘everything is poisonous – it all depends on the dose’. All medications can make anyone ill in big enough dosages. If you drink too much water it will result in death.
Delusion Number 3: BoTox will sting!
The hypodermic needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than a human hair. Numerous people have stated that the injections aren’t worse than being bit by mosquitoes. It certainly is less painful than a procedure like a vaccination.
Delusion Number 4: BoTox will deaden my face!
Not true. BoTox affects the neuromuscular junction, not the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax your muscles is affected by BoTox injections.
Delusion Number 5. You have to keep having BoTox or you will have worse fine lines and wrinkles than earlier!
Again this is simply untrue.
A set of injections is effective for around 3 months. Any injections after the first consultation commonly last a few weeks longer. The wrinkles will gradually return as the muscle returns to normal. Even So your wrinkles won’t be deeper than when you started your BoTox therapy.
Even if you do not have BoTox again – those lines should be better than if you hadn’t undergone the procedure. This, of course is chiefly so due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a rest whilst the treatment was active.
