Windsor Castle is believed to be the biggest lived in castles around at this moment in time & the eldest in continuous occupation (around 900 years). The origins of Windsor were in the early 7th century Saxon parish of Windlesora, where the recent day parish of Old Windsor is sited. Windsor Castle erected by William the Conqueror, owing to his attack of England in 1066. The original construction was erected from timber with sol barricades. Palace held an understandable strategic position on a steep mound overlooking the River Thames, & was a fraction of a circle of castles in the region the Capital, with the Tower of London, one day’s journey away, at its core.
The Castle was restored in rock, and grew in significance over the subsequent years. In recent times Henry II built the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the Castle’s main role became that of a royal dwelling. Windsor Castle has remained almost totally unaffected from the early 19th century, apart from the overhaul job following the dreadful fire in 1992.
