Minister Lord McKenzie of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced the launch of the Health Work and Well-being Challenge Fund. Small and medium sized business and local partnerships are eligible to bid for a share of the fund.

The Fund was first announced in ‘Improving health and work: changing lives,’ in November 2008, after a report by Dame Carol Black on the health of the working population across Britain. The government acted on Black’s review and initiated this fund to finance effective and well thought out projects aimed at improving the working conditions, health and safety of employees.

According to the announcement by Lord McKenzie, businesses with a worker count of 1 to 249 are eligible for receiving support from the Health Work and Well-being Challenge Fund. He said that the government is committed to helping employers provide safe and conducive work atmosphere to employees that will in turn increase productivity levels and job satisfaction. Such practices are also expected to reduce the number of workers’ sick leaves significantly and curb the incidence of work-related stress among employees.

The fund, which amounts to 4 million pounds, will be made available to selected projects in two rounds of funding. Winning bids can be allocated funds of anywhere between 1,000 pounds to 50,000 pounds in one year. The grant will be available for a period of two years ending March 2011. Winning bids will be selected by Local Assessment Panels on the basis of the quality of measures aimed at enhancing the occupational health and welfare of workers.
