Consumers do not have faith in the speeds of mobile broadband. The concept of baseline speed for mobile broadband is of no importance to the consumers as they do not even reach close to the broadband speed advertised by the service providers.
Nevertheless, a few months back, the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) had stated that the global industry baseline speed is 7.2Mb. The basis of this finding was that fifty percent of the total commercial HSPA networks across the globe could achieve the highest download speed of 7.2 Mb or more. Further, there were a number of mobile instruments compatible with this speed.
After this announcement, there has been a general curiosity in the broadband industry about the future baseline. On popular demand, the GSA started a study to decide upon the next baseline on the basis of information from experts. This two and a half month long study involved interviews of manufacturers, suppliers and network operators.
The final product of the study was the paper titled ‘Mobile Broadband – The Next Baseline’. It stated that majority of the interviewees believed that the future baseline that HSPA can support will be 21Mb. It will be possible in another year.
This finding is not unexpected as 21 Mb speed was being talked about within the industry for around nine months. Moreover, few of the interviewees said that this speed does not merely indicate the good user experience with the mobile broadband but is also indicative of other things in order to give a holistic view of the available service.
