Once upon a time, as an absolute beginner to the web game, I thought that building my own site would be the really hard part. I fondly believed that once my site was finished, and out there, discriminating surfers would come to it in droves.


How wrong I was. For several months after launching it I watched my magnificent site lie there like a dead dog, attracting weekly traffic totals that could — I’m not exaggerating — be counted on one hand.


It wasn’t hard to see what the problem was. My Google ranking was absurdly low. No matter what search terms I pumped into it, Google simply refused to display my site on the first page of results. And let’s face it, how many surfers bother looking beyond the top ten? It was time to face some hard facts. If I couldn’t locate my site through a Google search, how could I expect Joe Surfer to stumble across it?


Resolving to do something about it, I hit the web in search of answers. Vaguely aware that a site’s Google ranking depends on how many other websites link to it, and on how good the rankings of those sites are, I looked into the option of link swapping. But everything I read about it discouraged me. I had no desire to e-mail complete strangers proposing a link swap. Besides, what I really needed was to get my link on a big site — a site that attracted some really major traffic. And why would such a site want to swap with me, with my abysmal ranking? What would be in it for them? Nor did I really want to invest in one of those software programs that do the job for you. Indeed some of the more out-there link-swapping programs seemed to emit — how can I put this? — a distinct odor of Spam.


It’s no wonder that people who know about these things are already saying that link swapping is effectively dead as a means of site promotion.


And then I stumbled across the answer that has turned my site around. The E-zine article. Here’s how it works. You sign up with an E-zine site, like Ezinearticles.com. It takes about two minutes; it’s totally obligation-free; and it costs you nothing. Then you write an article or articles on any subject of your choosing, like the article I’m writing right now. You submit it to them, and provided it meets their terms and conditions they publish it on their site. They don’t pay you, of course — but what they do do is let you put your own web address down at the bottom of your article.


It’s a sweet solution, because it boosts your web traffic on several different fronts. For one, the E-zine sites tend to be big, established, high-traffic sites, so getting your URL on one of them will significantly improve your site’s ranking in any general Google search. Then there’s the more direct route: as long as your article addresses a reasonably oft-Googled topic, lots of people are going to find it and read it, and if it’s any good a fair few of them are going to click on your URL and check out your site. There’s also the strong chance that your article, if it’s any good, will be republished on other E-zine sites, which means that you’ll reap the same benefits all over again.


Even if you can’t write articles, or don’t want to, there are people out there who’ll ghost-write your stuff for you, at a price.

Creative imagination is more than just active imagination. To be able to actively imagine things, to see and hear things in one’s mind, is an important ability. It doesn’t have to involve much creativity, though, does it? Daydreaming, for example, is a process of imagination. It can consist of an elaborate fantasy world, but one full of all the things that many people think about.

Creative imagination, then, has to include the ability not just to imagine things, but to imagine original things. It is seeing things that others don’t see, and coming up with new ideas. So how do you cultivate this?

Creative Imagination 101

First, exercise your basic imagination. It can be as simple as thinking in pictures more, or listening to music in your mind. Play little “movies” in your mind, until you can watch them on command. This is a simple process, but for those of us that can’t easily do it naturally, it can take a lot of practice. Fortunately, it is not an unpleasant activity.

The second part of developing your creative imagination is to get more creative in your thinking and imagining. Start by paying attention to your creativity. Our subconscious minds give us more of what we pay attention to. Ignore creative aspects of your life, and you’re telling your subconscious they are unimportant. On the other hand, if you note when you’re creative, your subconscious mind will start feeding you more creative ideas.

Different surroundings can also encourage your creativity. Want more creativity in your love life? Hike up a mountain with your partner. Do you write? Try sitting on a roof to write. Want new ideas for your business? Take a notebook to the park and sit by the duck pond. A change of environment can get your thinking out of it’s ruts.

You can play games that exercise your creative imagination. One such game uses a technique called “concept combination.” Alone or with other players, you combine random concepts or things in new ways, to see who has the best idea. A thermometer and a billboard, for example, could generate an idea for a sign that checks the weather and adjusts the message accordingly (“Come in out of the heat for a cold beverage,” or “Come in out of the rain and warm up with our gourmet coffee.”).

Don’t Wait For Creative Imagination

Creative inspiration certainly can strike at any time, but it strikes more often when there is work instead of waiting. So if you want to come up with creative inventions, start mentally redesigning everything you see. Imagine a better bicycle, a faster mail service, or a better chair. Continue this for three weeks, and it will become a habit.

Of course, creative imagination goes beyond solving specific problems or inventing things. Truly creative minds are always coming up with the questions too, not just the solutions. If you want to be more creative all the time, focus on three things:

1. Changing your perspective. A child might think that working just to not work (to retire) is silly. Thinking from that perspective might give you ideas for how to make money doing things you enjoy. Seeing the world as a bear sees it might give a painter imaginative new ideas. Looking at things from a customer’s perspective is a sure way to find creative improvements for a business. See everything from several perspectives.

2. Challenging your assumptions. What if restaurants didn’t have employees? Visitors pay a machine as they enter, feed themselves at a buffet, and everything is as automated as possible, so one owner-operator could run a large restaurant alone. Challenge all your assumptions for practice. Do you really have to pay rent? Do swimming pools need water? Can exercise be a bad thing?

3. Let your ideas run wild. Does a flying bed seem silly? It could lead to the concept of a helium mattress. When you get off it in the morning, it floats out of the way, up to the ceiling. Perfect for small apartments. Don’t stifle your creativity. Relax, and let ideas come. You can always discard them later.

For these techniques to be a habitual part of your thinking, use them regularly. Since it takes several weeks to develop a habit, remind yourself to use them each day. Jot a few of your favorite techniques on a card and carry it with you. Look it over throughout the day and apply the techniques to anything. Soon, you’ll have a more creative imagination.

Search “forum” plus the topic of your site on Google or Alta Vista. For my first site, I searched “backpacking + forum” and in the pages of results I found several good forums. Registration is usually giving your email address and choosing a password. Some forums allow guests to post without registering. Once registered, browse the forum topics, and post a response to anything, just to “learn the ropes”.

The point of posting in forums is to get readers to come to your web site. Sure it’s fun to give advice and discuss things of interest to you, but that’s secondary. With that in mind, do the following:

1. Always link to your site. If they don’t allow any links, find another forum.

2. Don’t “spam.” Sales pitches will be removed. Offer honest advice, or express an opinion, then sign off with your name and the link to your site.

3. Ask for help from others. This is an effective and acceptable way to “advertise.” Enter a topic like “Can I get some advice?” and post something like, “I just started a meditation site. If some of you would visit and tell me what you think, I’d really appreciate it.” Have a link to the site. People love to help, and to give opinions, and they’ll click on those ads while they’re at your site.

4. Look at total “views.” Many forums show the total times each “thread” has been viewed. When you see some with many more than others, get in on those, or start a new thread on the same topic. Go where the traffic is, and get some of it.

I didn’t like the idea of forums until I made a few posts, and saw my traffic and revenue climb for days afterwards. That convinced me.
